Each year the Rotary Club of Valdese honors an individual for their commitment to the quality of life in central/eastern Burke County through their efforts and/or resources. This award will use the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” as the guidelines for the selection. Any person or organization who volunteers time and/or resources is eligible to receive this award. Anyone may enter a name by filling out a nomination form.
A committee of past presidents of the Rotary Club of Valdese will serve to choose the winner of this award. The award will be called the Rotary Club of Valdese “Service Above Self Award.” The winner will receive a personal plaque and will have their name put on a permanent plaque in the Whisenant Rotary Room. The recipient will be honored at one of our lunch meetings in November. The program that day will be the recognition of the recipient and the presentation of the award. We will also honor this recipient by having them ride in the annual Valdese Christmas Parade.
All Service Above Self Award Nomination Forms must be turned by October 30.

Catawba Valley Staffing is the first company in the area to take advantage of our Corporate Membership option. Melanie Townsend will be the prime contact for the company.
At the Town of Valdese Family Fun night on Friday, September 22, Rotarians worked the snack shack while the Interactors handled the 50/50 raffle. From the raffle the Interact Clubs will get $68.
Hallyburton Weekend Backpacks are covered by Drexel First Baptist Church, Mount Calvary Baptist Church and the Hallyburton Staff (the final Friday of the month). This year the Hallyburton Staff will cover October 27, November 21 (the Tuesday before Thanksgiving), December 19 (the Tuesday before the Christmas break), January 26, February 23, March 29 (the Thursday before Spring break), April 27, and May 18.
As part of our District Grant serving the Ministerial Association, we will purchase $330 worth of supplies for the backpacks for the Hallyburton Staff times. We will shop, deliver and organize. Hopefully, we can also help pack.
We are also collecting items from Rotarians to help fill the shelves. Through October, bring in peanut butter, ramen noodles, instant oats, crackers, pop tarts, breakfast bars, fruit cups, and snacks. This is to cover 2 breakfast items, 2 lunch items, 2 dinner items, and snacks for the weekend.
As a part of this grant, we will also volunteer at DFBC’s BREAD – Food Ministry – 2nd Sunday of the Month, 80 families served. Dates are coming.
Gretchen Lane Costner, director of the Waldensian Heritage Museum, told us about the activities planned to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Valdese!
The town and the Waldensian Presbyterian Church will both be celebrating 125 years. Don’t worry town monies and church monies are being kept separate!
Activities start in February, 2018 and run though December, 2018. For a complete list of events.
Rotary Club of Valdese plans to help in some way for the celebration – even if we are just general volunteers.
On Tuesday, September 19, Courtney Kennedy, Town of Valdese Deputy Clerk, was inducted as a new member of our club. Past Presdident Jon Mercer presided over the induction and it was a time for all members to reflect on what it means to be a Rotarian. Seth Eckard was her sponsor and will continue as her club mentor.
Courtney will join Joy Harding and Vivian Carothers in the class of 2017-2018. We also have Daniel Wall back this year!
Our Club’s 70th Anniversary Celebration will be on Tuesday, October 10 at our Noon meeting. We are mailing invites to all living past presidents who are not current members to attend and give highlights of our year (that is 26 people). We also want to hear from our current members who are past presidents – that is 10 members!!!
The actual date of our charter is Oct 13, 1947.
