Program – Christmas Story

Santa & Mrs. Claus made a special appearance to spread good cheer! Dr John Lafferty (34years) and Pastor Kevin Fredericks (10 years) were given gum for their “Stick-to-itiveness”. The wonderfully talented story teller was at it again this year! Mrs. Elsie Whisnant told us “How Come Christmas” and it was festive and funny! Our guest was Isaac Owolabi, DG 2018-2019.

Program – Kids Day

On Tuesday, Dec 5, Rotary looked like the kids had taken over. VES 2nd graders came to sing Christmas songs, VES Rotakids came to observe a meeting, Citizenship Winners from HMS and DHS were honored. What a great day!

Interact to JIRC

On Sunday, Dec 3, DHS and HMS Interact Clubs went to J Iverson Riddle Development Center to push residents who use wheel chairs to Sunday Service. With 10 students and 4 adults (2 Rotarians and a Rotary Spouse), we were able to get a lot of people to service.

Valdese Christmas Parade

Thanks to Bruce and Susan for creating a special float for the Rotary Club of Valdese. Starting with a way to transport our Service Above Self Award Winner, it grew to include the Rotarian of the Year, any Rotarian and Interact Members. It was a fun day for all.

The Interact kids were invited based on their service points.

The Rotary Wheel was donated by Larry and Audrey Earp.

Faith Kaplan was the Service Above Self Award Winner.

Beth Heile was the Rotarian of the Year and club president.

Principal Karen Auton is implementing a STRIVE program at DHS with the kick-off meeting being February 5. The program will be a combination of STRIVE at Freedom by Buddy Armour, Ted’s program at Hallyburton and new ideas.

Jeff Carter will be the lead from Rotary Club of Valdese. Meetings will be once a month, 11:30-12:30 (Feb 5, Mar 5, Apr 16, May 7). There will be a speaker and Rotarians sitting with the 12-16 kids for lunch.

The hope is to include 2 $500 scholarship each year for one of the students. As a club, perhaps we can add that in next year – BDI may also help this get started. For this year, we hope to do a gift card for each student ($25 each?).
