Service – Books to Summer Reading Program

The Rotary Club of Valdese started the summer reading program in Burke County. For 10 years, we provided books, snacks and paid for the teachers for the teachers to work during the session and training for teachers at 5 schools in the county. Having the teachers become Orton Gillingham certified helped improve the reading skills of children with new methods. In addition, Rotarians volunteered their time to read with children.

The summer of 2016 Burke County schools decided to become responsible for this program. Our club wanted to continue to help and we now provide books for the children to take home with them.

This year, we raised $500 from club members and club funds, and $250 was donated from the Valdese Merchants Association. That is $750 that will be spent on books for the 3rd graders required to attend summer school for books to take home with them. Each child will receive 2 hardback books!

On Tuesday, July 11 at 1pm, after our club meeting, we will stick the book plates inside the books. Please plan to “stick” around for a little while after the meeting.

On Thursday, July 13, our club will present the books to the kids at Valdese Elementary School. Time will be announced later.

$200 in books will be sent to a primary school in Guatemala that is supported by the Presbyterian Church and a local Rotary Club.
